What are the types of product management roles?
There are a whole bunch of variations in the product management job family. Knowing the difference between a product manager and a program manager is essential. You will also have the option to choose the kind of product that you want to manage. You could select between business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B), revenue generation and cost optimization, or technical and non-technical roles.
Why is it important to choose your role type?
Your experience depends on the type of product that you manage. Even if you are good at product management, an ill-suited role type will diminish the joy you get out of the work that you're doing.
Can role types be changed?
You can experiment with different product management role types to see what fits. There is no sure-shot way of knowing what will work for you. The only way to know is to spend some time working in those role types. Once you have honed in on your preference, you will find it easier to excel at product management.
